Maternal Health - Laima Zeidars
The Maternal Health Promotion Program exists to support and improve the health of pregnant women and their babies. The program aims to empower women and communities with knowledge, to ensure they are informed about healthy choices when it comes to pregnancy. The program is coordinated by Laima Ziedars.
The program can provide: • Education sessions on women’s health topics including healthy pregnancy to any interested people or groups in the Fitzroy Valley. • Support to pregnant women and mothers through assisting the development and running of pregnancy support groups and Mums and Bubs groups. • Support to first time mums through running ‘First time mum’s trips to Derby’, to familiarise them with the birthing process. • Facilitate young women’s groups, as well as run pregnancy education sessions targeted to, and appropriate for, teenage women. • Support to community initiatives promoting healthy pregnancies, including supporting alcohol, tobacco and gunja free pregnancies.
Laima is particularly interested in working with the young women of the valley, to empower them to make informed choices about health, including pregnancy. The Nindilingarri Maternal and Child Health program does not provide clinical services, however it does run initiatives to encourage women to attend antenatal and postnatal check-ups. Laima is interested in working in partnership with other organisations in the Fitzroy Valley to ensure everybody is working collaboratively so that the mothers and babies of the valley can achieve the best health outcomes possible.
